Tantris Metamorphose

I WOULD NEVER HAVE THOUGHT THAT A LISTED ARCHITECTURAL STYLE ICON LIKE TANTRIS COULD GAIN EVEN MORE RADIANCE AS IT DID WITH MARTIN NINK’S WALL-SIZED PHOTO INSTALLATIONS. A FASCINATING PIECE OF WORK!

Regulars, starred TANTRIS restaurant, Munich

  • THE OBJECTIVE

This big contract for the starred Tantris restaurant in Munich, a culinary, architectural and interior design icon known far beyond Germany, included a total of 5 installations. The concept and goal were to extend the existing rooms with fictitious rooms and scenes from the Tantris.

  • Making of Metamorphose

THE IMPLEMENTATION

Here, spatial elements from the Tantris and people were photographed in partial shots and then newly superimposed into fictitious spaces. Among other things, a new impressive 8-metre wine cellar was created, which now opens up on one side of the large dining room. All motifs were designed in their real proportions, paying close attention to existing lighting conditions and using a subtle play of existing colours, shapes and accessories. This enabled the complete integration of the installations into the strong and concise spatial presence of the Tantris in terms of colour and architecture. At the same time, they bring new impulses and elegant visual attraction to this listed building. As in a true metamorphosis, the rooms of the Tantris open up into a new, previously unimagined vastness. Fresh perspectives show new views and surprising details. They have become an integral part and visual enhancement of the overall concept.

The effect of spatial depth is enhanced by the chosen carrier material for the installations – an 8 mm thick glass lamination. In this process, the motifs exposed on photo paper are bonded to the glass by applying silicone, giving the motif an extra three-dimensional quality.

Description of special feature & implementation

A new impressive 8-metre-long wine cellar was created from partial photographs of the existing wine cellar. Installed in the large dining room, both seated guests and passers-by now look into a gigantic wine cellar where a sommelier and two beautiful women are immersed in contemplation of the wines. The installation opens another side to the large dining room giving it additional depth. On closer inspection, all the labels and capsules of the wine bottles can be studied and the immense quality of the range can be admired.

In the lowered dining area of the large dining room directly below the large TANTRIS symbol, there used to be an inconspicuous wall covered in black fabric into which a small bar was embedded. The “RED PILLARS” installation designed for this purpose creates an architectural and spatial connection to the TANTRIS symbol above it that now rests on several red columns, on which an attractive woman looks casually towards the dining room. The bar embedded in the wall was photographically extended upwards with additional bottles and downwards with a champagne cooler standing from the floor. The hyper-realistic impression is amazing, as can be seen clearly in the making-of video.

In the separee, a medium-sized dining room that was previously cut off by a concrete wall to the front, the focus was also on the spatial expansion incorporating typical stylistic elements of the Tantris. Since the wall to be equipped is visible from almost all areas of the restaurant, a lively scene should attract guests’ attention. Architectural elements such as the famous scorpion fish and the orange coloured curtains form the frame and give the room depth. The restaurant scene is proportionally arranged in such a way that the table in the picture with the woman lying on it and the real tables in the restaurant create a perspective escape and thus integrate perfectly. On the overall motif, the table accessories, the chocolates and the arranged dishes can be seen vividly and down to the smallest detail.

Description of special feature & implementation

The smallest spatial installation in the Tantris has an equally effective spatial and visual effect. The intention was to create a spatial connection between the main room and the somewhat hidden bar in the side building through a visual highlight, attracting the attention of the guest entering the Tantris. Mounted on a bare concrete wall between the bar and the kitchen area, this area was not previously noticed after entering the Tantris on the way to the cloakroom. The room was expanded and opened by continuing the red columns in the installation and extending the room upwards by adding a staircase. Dressed in a tightly fitting, bright orange dress and descending the stairs, the attractive woman automatically draws the visitor’s attention with a sense of astonishment and admiration.

This installation shows that installations can also function spatially in the most diverse of places, enhancing and expanding rooms. Due to the position of the installation below the ceiling, the focus here is less on the richness of detail or the representation of an image full of events, but predominantly on its effect when viewed from a medium to longer distance. The natural view from bottom to top has been taken into account in terms of perspective and content. The suggestion of an upward leading staircase and a railing in the typical orange tone of the Tantris conveys the impression of a gallery on which a woman poses in a red dress. The previously inconspicuous wall lying in the dark is now also actively integrated into the restaurant, providing a spatial extension and vertical visual enhancement.
